School Based Intervention Counselor

We are a dedicated agency committed to improving the mental health and well-being of children and families. We seek a passionate and compassionate School-Based Intervention Counselor to join our team, working directly in the school environment to provide crucial support to students and families.
Position Summary:
The School-Based Intervention Counselor will provide counseling, crisis intervention, and referral services to both regular and special education students within the assigned school district. This role aims to meet the mental health needs of students, ensuring greater access to mental health treatment and referral programs. The counselor will collaborate with families, school staff, and behavioral health specialists to create a supportive environment for students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individual and group counseling to students addressing academic, emotional, and social challenges.
- Develop Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) for students as needed.
- Offer guidance and counseling in small groups or classrooms, covering educational, social, and mental health topics.
- Consult with parents, teachers, and school administrators to discuss student progress and implement solutions for emotional and educational needs.
- Collaborate with behavioral health specialists and other professionals to provide comprehensive support.
- Conduct crisis intervention and provide timely referrals to appropriate services.
- Mentor students in social skills and classroom behaviors, helping them navigate both school and public settings.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in compliance with agency and school standards.
- Attend school activities and meetings as needed to support students' overall development.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Human Services (or equivalent as determined by Program Manager and Director of Pupil Services).
- At least 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience.
- Knowledge of ethics, confidentiality, and child welfare.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and electronic health records.
- Valid NYS driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must pass Medicaid exclusion screening and background check.
Preferred:
- 1 year of experience in a behavioral health setting.
- Experience facilitating adolescent groups or counseling adolescents.
- Familiarity with local community-based services and resources for children and families.
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent documentation, organizational, and time management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with diverse populations.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Sensitivity to and respect for confidentiality and ethical standards.
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position primarily following the school district’s schedule, working 40 hours per week from September to June. Attendance is required at quarterly clinical training sessions, bi-weekly supervision meetings, and additional trainings as scheduled.
