Job Summary:
The Flatwork worker is responsible for manually feeding laundry machinery, such as folding, ironing or tunnel dryer machines. Flatwork staff works as a team, and each member may operate up to 6 different machines within a shift, as well as handle both wet and dry laundry as needed.
This position is located at our 542 N Perry St Johnstown NY Location
Hours: 6am - 2:30pm - M-F
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will work within a team of people performing similar duties. Along with one or more team members, a Century Flatwork worker may perform some or all of the following duties during a given shift:
- Push/pull a sling of cleaned linens and dumping into a pile in bin
- Retrieve washed wet/damp linens from a bin (cart)
- Identify the customer by the garment tag
- Separate/open linens
- Feed linens onto a machine belt for folding or ironing
- Place linens in an automated stacker or conveyor
- Place garments onto a metal hanger
- Hang garments on the conveyer for processing, such as in the Tunnel Dryer
- Catch/stack linen as it comes out of folding machines
- Check machinery as needed, e.g. in case of jams
Additional Responsibilities:
On occasion, a Flatwork worker may be requested to handle linen which requires special attention,
including:
- Opening and/or sorting clean bundled linens and folding them on tabletop
- Visually and manually inspecting for the area to be mended
- Repairing linen by cutting away any loose thread or material, pinching the seams together, and running it through the sewing machine using a foot pedal
- Counting folded linens and stacking them by count
- Returning repaired linen to bins
- Perform other tasks as assigned by manager

Physical Requirements:
- Physical Demands consist of standing, walking, reaching overhead, bending, stooping, twisting, pushing, pulling, grasping, and lifting 50 lbs. or more
- Constant pushing/pulling of laundry carts with weights of 250 lbs. is common with some cart weights exceeding 600 lbs.
- Must be able to meet the physical demands for the entire shift
Work Environment:
Production areas of a typical industrial laundry facility, which includes working with and around large machinery, variations in temperature, noise, odors, humidity, lint, dust, chemicals and other hazards.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Reading and writing comprehension, computer and math skills typically associated with a high school level education
- Quality orientation and high attention to detail
- Able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations
- Strong teamwork skills - ready and willing to work closely with team members
- Open to and able to work day or night shifts, and willing to rotate shifts depending on production need
- Open to long hours and working weekends (Sat/Sun)
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Prior experience working in a plant environment
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
