Nature writing gives us a chance to explore and recount the experiences that await us outside. Connecting with Nature offers the opportunity to slow down and observe with all of our senses while realigning our rhythms with the changing spring landscape. All writers are welcome, regardless of experience level - just bring a desire to flex your nature writing muscles. Bring your notebook or journal. The Musicians of Ma'alwyck ? Concert Intime: Exploring the Legacy of the Zoellner Quartet Musicians of Ma?alwyck brings history to life with an unforgettable musical journey, reviving the legacy of the trailblazing Zoellner String Quartet. Take a step back in time to experience the music, stories, and adventures of this remarkable early 20th-century ensemble ? a trip to the music of the time when The Glove Theatre first opened in 1914! The quartet, composed of the Zoellner family members, toured actively throughout North America, presenting concerts in venues from New York?s Aeolian Hall and great performing stages of Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, to train depots and outdoor concerts. With Antoinette Zoellner as first violin?a rarity at the time?the quartet became a symbol of the women?s suffrage movement. The quartet democratized classical music. Instead of limiting themselves to the exclusivity of concert halls, they performed in train stations, granges, and outdoor spaces. With Antoinette Zoellner as the quartet?s first violinist - a rarity at that time - was a groundbreaking figure. The quartet became a symbol of the women?s suffrage movement and gained recognition extending beyond music - they became cultural ambassadors, performing for figures like suffragist Avery Coonley Ward and disability rights advocate Helen Keller. Keller, who could feel their music through vibration, so enjoyed it that she invited them to spend two summers with her at her summer residence in Wrentham in 1915 and 16. Through Helen Keller, the quartet met Lydia Avery Coonley Ward, an important suffragist and philanthropist, who split her time between her home in Chicago and her summer retreat in Wyoming, New York. In 1917, she invited the quartet to be in residence in Wyoming. The quartet spent more than two months there, performing for the summer school, giving weekly concerts in the Village Hall, and playing together on the grounds of her estate Hillside. The Musicians of Ma?alwyck will recreate the musical programming of the Zoellners, which contained a substantial repertory of American composers of the time, as well as American premieres of new works by European composers. Stepping in for the Zoellners will be Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, violinist, and Founder & Artistic Director of Musicians of Ma?alwyck, MofM core member André Laurent O?Neil, cello; and guest artists Fritz Krakowski, violin; and Katrina Smith, viola. Join Musicians of Ma?alwyck for Concert Intime and step back in time with the Zoellner String Quartet! All ages welcome! Age 21+ to drink adult beverages. Join stained glass artisan Doug Hallberg for this 5-hour intensive mega-workshop on the craft of working with stained glass! The Glove's Open Mic welcomes singers (we even have Karaoke available!), dancers, slam poets, magicians, stand-up comedians, and variety artists of all kinds to take The Glove Theatre?s mainstage for a 10 minute maximum set. Polish up your repertoire, stretch, warm-up, and strut your stuff at The Glove! Open mic: 7.00pm - 9.30pm (sign-up begins at 6.30pm) $5.00 suggested donation for audience members. Drumming is returning to Landis! Join us from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on the first and third Wednesdays of the month (June 4th and 18th, July 2nd and 16th, August 6th and 20th, and September 3th and 17th) We?ll be in or near the Peace Pavilion at Landis to drum with leader Art Teale. Your kids will love spending a week at the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts learning about science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM)! With everything from art projects to musical creations to science experiments to exercise their brains, kids of all ages and interests will be sure to have a ton of fun at this program! Openings in the Nigra Arts Center Kids' Art Programs are very limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sirsy is an indie pop/rock duo, from NY, with LOTS of heart, soul, & sass! The Boston Globe calls them ''the little band with the BIG sound''. Sirsy is made up of 2 multi-instrumentalists: singer-songwriter & drummer Melanie Krahmer and her cowriter/husband and guitarist Rich Libutti. Mel also plays piano, flute, and bass on a keyboard with her drumstick. At live shows, Rich plays bass on a pedal board with his feet. So, these two manage to sound like a full band, and despite their multitasking, do it all with big smiles on their faces. It?s clear they love what they do. And that love is contagious when you see them live. SVAN Summer Concert Presents: The Insolent Willies at Northville Waterfront Park
The Insolent Willies are an upstate New York roots-rock band known for their hip-shaking mix of quirky, clever original music and unpredictable covers. The band was formed in 2017 by singer-songwriters Bill Ackerbauer (acoustic guitar, harmonica, fiddle, vocals) and Frank DeVer Pullen (bass, mandolin, banjo, vocals), and now includes Paul Gavry (accordion, fiddle, vocals) and Evan Gavry (guitars, percussion, vocals), with occasional appearances by friends such as Mike Gowans, Jenny Harder, Dusty Elmer, David Wong and others. Biriba Union Trio -Live Music at Sherman's Park
Borrowing its name from a Brazilian wild sugar-apple, Biribá Union features Mike Block (cello, vocals), Christylez Bacon (beatbox, guitar, rhymes) and Patricia Ligia (electric bass, vocals). The trio met through Silkroad?s Global Musician Workshop, initially bonding over their shared love of Brazilian music. They quickly began co-writing new music that draws on the freestyle theatrics of hip-hop and Go-go music; the effortless beauty of Brazilian forró and choro; the earthiness of American roots music, and the improvisational spontaneity of jazz. Mike Block is a Grammy Award-winning cellist, singer, and composer with a passion for cross-cultural collaboration. Hailed as ?one of the bravest, most intriguing musicians on the American fusion scene? (Gramophone), he has been a member of the Silkroad Ensemble for nearly twenty years and directs Silkroad?s Global Musician Workshop. Yo-Yo Ma calls Block ?the ideal musician for the 21st century,? saying, ?I?m always struck by his unique perspective on the world and his relaxed and confident approach; he takes on new music and new things fearlessly.? Christylez Bacon is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, storyteller, rapper, beatboxer, and guitarist from southeast Washington, DC. With a tall antenna and wide curiosity, Bacon loves exploring music in different cultural contexts and has collaborated with Hindustani, Arabic, and Brazilian musicians. He was the first hip-hop artist to be featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and has composed for and performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and Princeton Symphony Orchestra. Patricia Ligia is an electric bass player and composer from Montevideo, Uruguay. In addition to playing in Colombian pop superstar Karol G?s touring band (with whom she has performed on Saturday Night Live, NPR?s Tiny Desk, The Today Show, and stadium shows around the world), Ligia is cofounder of Mestizas, a band that fuses flamenco and jazz with folkloric music from Latin America and the Caribbean. For her, Uruguayan culture makes it feel ?easy to be alive, spread joy, and share music.? Biribá Union makes a unique rhythmic cocktail with Bacon?s inner-city DC hip-hop and go-go rhythms entwined with Ligia?s subtropic bass lines. ?Everyone feels safe to switch roles and go to unknown places,? Ligia explains. Block agrees, saying, ?We all have a lot of room to breathe. We can each shapeshift yet magically never get in each other?s way.? Bacon says that meeting Block was ?like finding a twin spirit.? ?He?s an emcee in the original sense of the word. A true master of ceremonies who can take the crowd on a mission with him.?
